Filter sweeps are an amazing way to add character and energy to your tracks very, very quickly
0:06
But these can be a little tedious to use if you're trying to do it with an EQ plugin
0:10
So in this video, I'm going to show you how you can quickly and very easily add all kinds of amazing filter sweeps to your tracks in an instant
0:18
Hi, I'm Reagan Rand with Orpheus Audio Academy, helping you make better music and grow fan base online
0:23
And real quick, before I show you how to create these filter sweeps, be sure to grab my free mixing checklist in the description below
0:30
This walks you through a proven step-by-step system for creating professional quality tracks from home each and every time
0:37
So you can grab that below or go to Orpheus Audioacademy.com slash mixing checklist
0:41
So you can see here I have the automation pulled up in my track here and I'm displaying the different filter sweeps going on here
0:48
And you could do this with like an EQ plugin. So right, so I could pull up an EQ plugin like this, which says just one node here or you can use your stock EQ
0:57
I would choose a filter here and then I can just automate the sweep here
1:02
But that's a little tedious. And it doesn't really let you create any resonance
1:06
as you can see unless again, you're using a different EQ plugin than this one. So the way I like to do it, my favorite way to do this, is using one knob filter
1:14
because this lets you add resonance here. So I have high resonance actually on here
1:19
So we can hear what this is doing now. And I've got everything filter
1:23
I've got my chords filtered. I've got my bass and my drums filter
1:27
here although I'm filtering these inside of this candy drum synth here basically the sweep here
1:34
I'm just automating that up. So has that built in. But otherwise, you want to use something like this one, not filter by waves
1:40
This is really awesome. If you want to check this out for yourself, I have a link to the description or go to Orpheus Audioacadammy.com slash filter
1:46
And so we'll hear what this is doing. We can see the filter opening up slowly long got a long build here You can hear it getting louder It adds energy
2:11
And so that's pretty much all you do is you just automate this one knob here
2:16
You can choose if what you want the resonance to be or not. So residence is adding a little peak at the point where
2:23
the frequencies are being cut. So if I were to maybe illustrate that on an EQ here
2:29
so it would be like, this would be what we're doing. So we're cutting it and then it's opening up
2:34
But resonance is adding a little peak like that. So you can choose with the one knob if you want it to be none
2:41
You can have no resonance or moderate, high or extreme. In this case, I was using high
2:45
So that is how you can add filter sweeps. Next, I'm going to talk about when you want to include these in your tracks
2:50
But before I do, be sure to hit that like button. gotten value from this video so far. So when do you want to use these filter sweeps
2:57
Well, I like to use them in the intro, right? So the energy is starting little and then it builds up
3:01
I also like to use them going out of a verse into a pre-chorus or a chorus because again, you're building up in your energy
3:08
And then once you hit the chorus, that's the peak. That's when you want your full frequency spectrum
3:13
You don't want to cut those highs out. So you can see what I'm doing here is I'm starting with the base cut and then it opens up here for each of the choruses
3:21
same thing for the chords here you don't open up all the way but you can see where it's the loudest
3:27
is during the choruses and then you can see it's even these first choruses are lower and then the
3:33
final chorus is maximum frequency spectrum one other thing i want to mention is when you are
3:39
really cutting out the highs and you have just the lows of your song left that can be a little
3:45
overwhelming you can get a little like sound a little distorted get a little too rumbly because right when you are right on your mix plus You going to be putting some compression It going to be mastered It going to be limited so when all you have are those little low frequencies those are going to be really boosted and that can get cause things to be too rumbly you don really hear it too much here
4:11
but if i were to turn on a limiter you can see it's just a little too too muddy too rumbly uh
4:21
It's not good. So that's where I would use something like this
4:25
because one knob by waves only does the highs. So I would flip this around and do this
4:31
And then I would automate in a high pass filter as well
4:35
So we're going to be high cutting as well as low cutting
4:40
And so as the highs open, the lows are going to open as well
4:45
So maybe I'd start like right there. Here in logic, I'll go ahead and automate this in
4:50
so we'll come down to EQ1 and we want to do the frequency correct yes and so we'll start here
4:57
and then we'll be boom full frequency range at the end here so it'll be opening like this
5:07
so maybe I'm going to start this up at like 200 or something so we'll hear how this sounds now
5:11
and I'm curving it so maybe I want to curve this as well like that so it's kind of mirroring what's going on to high frequencies
5:26
still a little too rumbling maybe I'll put it up at 287
5:41
So we talked about using filter sweeps to create an increase in energy over time
6:01
But we can also just use it as a cool transitory effect here
6:06
So that's what I'm doing here in my verse here. I have a bus here that all my rhythm tracks are going to
6:12
So that's my drums, my bass, my chords and some other rhythm synths
6:17
And so we can see, just periodically here, I am going to just filter sweep out all the way down to four here using the one knob filter
6:27
So it's going to go way down to four. And I have the resonance set to high
6:31
So it's going to create kind of a wippy kind of laser almost kind of sound
6:35
So we'll hear that now. So I thought that was pretty cool. It creates a pretty cool sound, especially around the vocals kind of helps like different phrases in the vocals stand out. So we'll hear that. The vocals in
7:04
So it's Emotation hearts Replicate mind Illusion of choice Are we so blind
7:29
So it's kind of cool because you have like Certain phrases that sound out Formalda hi And then
7:33
hide. Nice how you can quickly add filter sweeps to your tracks. Remember, grab my free
